We are currently the only registered Non-Profit Wolf Sanctuary in Southern Africa. We do not breed. Socialising or our animals are done only in the event we receive pups from unscrupulous breeders that need to be bottle-fed. We have at present 44 animals in our care. We are non-profit organisation and are self-funded. We require the person wishing to volunteer to be a SME (subject matter expert) if possible in order to be able to carry out Behaviour Studies on wolves in captivity. Pictures of the sanctuary are available from our website. If the volunteer/s is/are not SME's we require enthusiasm and the ability to do hard, dirty work.

Sanctuary building began in May 2000.

Volunteers doing Behaviour Studies should stay for at LEAST one month in order to complete a comprehensive study. Volunteers doing general office work or manual/physical work/ animal work may stay as long as they wish. The time period should be a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of six months.

  10. Will a stay only be possible at a certain time of year? If yes, during which months? / Ist ein Aufenthalt nur zu bestimmten Monaten im Jahr möglich? Wenn ja, während welcher?

A stay is possible at any time of the year. Although you need to bear in mind the winter rainfall in the area can keep someone indoors for two or three days in a row. Note also Mid-Summer temperatures can be as high as 32ºC

Bus - intercity buses who run their own schedule. Sanctuary transport - the possibility exists that the sanctuary manager visits Kareedouw on an almost daily basis and volunteers can obtain a lift with him at that time. Due to costs, if volunteers need more frequent or unscheduled visits to this town, the volunteer will incur a small transport fee to cover vehicle costs. This fee is available from manager on request.

If not, how much will the volunteer have to pay per week/month? / Welche Art von Unterkunft für Volontär? Kurze Beschreibung! Sind Unterkunft und Verpflegung inklusive? Wenn nicht, wie viel muss das Volontär pro Woche/Monat bezahlen?

We have a very small rustic "cabins" with very basic bathroom and kitchen facilities. Accommodation is free - but food will need to be paid for or purchased by the volunteer. There is a small Bed and Breakfast facility down the road with ALL amenities which includes B+B at R210-00 per day and I am sure that they would be able to organise an evening meal if they stay for a month or more. We recommend this option if the volunteer feels that they might not cope well with very primitive / basic "amenities" such as no/ very littl electricity, heating, lights, hot water etc etc.

  16. Please give detailed description of tasks and duties of the volunteer? Please specify his/her work schedule and possible holidays. / Genaue Aufgaben des Volontärs? Arbeits- bzw. Urlaubszeiten?

All emergency / specialised work / tasks are allocated daily. General work schedules are posted at the main office on the notice board and with the sanctuary manager.
If the volunteers are/is SME's they will be carrying out Wolf Behaviour Studies and other similar activities. "Unskilled labour" will do a lot of "dirty" work in the form of mowing lawns planting gardens, cleaning up after wolves etc. Off weekends are allocated by the Sanctuary Manager usually on an alternate weekend basis. Additional "off" weekends may be requested from the Sanctuary Manager. This will allow volunteers to visit or spend weekends in nearby "tourism spots" such as Jeffreys Bay, Plettenberg Bay, Cape St. Francis or Storms River.
